Stick welding uses a flux-coated electrode that makes its own shielding, so wind doesn't blow it out and it burns through rust, paint and mill scale better than other processes. That makes it the workhorse for outdoor and on-site jobs: structural steel, heavy equipment, trailers, fences, posts and repairs on steel that can't be brought to the shop.
